Miles, IA JoAn J. Thomsen, age 86 of Clinton, formerly of Miles, passed away Friday, April 28, 2017 at the Alverno Health Care Facility. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 9-11 AM on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at Faith Lutheran Church in Andover. A memorial service will begin at 11 AM Wednesday. Lunch will immediately follow the memorial service. Burial will be at Miles Cemetery following the lunch. JoAn was born in Clinton on August 5, 1930, the daughter of Albert and Lizzetta (Smith) Watters. She graduated from Lyons High School in 1948. JoAn married Eugene Thomsen on January 21, 1951 in Clinton. Eugene passed away on May 17, 2014. JoAn had been employed as a bookkeeper at Feeders Supply in Miles and later worked for Clinton National Bank in Miles and Preston. She was a very active member of Faith Lutheran Church and had served as director of the Great River Threshers and of the Miles Elderly Housing. JoAn is survived by three daughters; Peggy (Allen) Gerdes of Lebanon, IL, Kimberly (Michael) Cummings of Sabula and Jill (Michael) Thompson of Houston, TX; seven grandchildren, Matthew (Sandi) Gerdes, Luke Gerdes, Ryan Cummings, Jenna (Keith) Jensen, Chad Reynolds, Ashley (Chris) Beers and Cole Thompson; five great grandchildren, Annastasia, Landen, Brooklyn, Brayden and Kaylin. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Eugene and a brother Richard. Memorials can be made to Camp Courageous or Faith Lutheran Church in Andover.

Clinton, Iowa Heather L. (Bray) Darsidan age 40 of Clinton, passed away Friday April 28, 2017 at her home. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Friday May 5th at the Pape Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Thursday 4 – 7 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be at St. Irenaeus Calvary Cemetery. She enjoyed doing puzzles, crossword puzzles, crafts, hiking, fishing, and her animals. Heather is survived by her four children, McKenzley Morris of Clinton, Austin and John Shafer of Vernal, UT, and Gabriella Bray of Clinton; Her fiancé, Brad Bray of Clinton; her parents, John and Shirley Darsidan; a sister, Dawn (Corey) Darsidan-Hyde of Clinton; a brother, Shawn Darsidan of Clinton; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Florence Struck and her son, Brandon Buikema.

Clinton, IA Ricky F. DeCoster, age 59 of Clinton, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at his home. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until 4: 00 P.M. Saturday, May 6th at the Pape Funeral Home with family and friends sharing stories of Rick beginning at 4:00 P.M. Following the services all are invited to the Silver Dollar to continue the celebration of Rick’s life. Rick was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on September 9, 1957, the son of Donald F. and Ruth Ann (Bullard) DeCoster. He graduated from Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids in 1975. Rick married Marie Kay VanderSanden on April 15, 1978 in Cedar Rapids. Rick was a jack-of-all trades and a master craftsman following in the footsteps of his father and uncles, building his own business, DeCoster Construction. He had worked for Reliable Services, Zirkelbach’s, Clinton Back and Neck, Brian Crosser, Kristiansen and Sons, Jody Bielema Construction and E.B. Construction. Rick enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, golfing, fishing, boating, camping, skiing, dirt track racing, road trips and especially his Wednesday night get togethers with chicken legs. Rick is survived by his three sons; Kyle (Kimberly Leeper) DeCoster, Kalvin (Nikki Dean) DeCoster and Kody (Danica Stone) DeCoster all of Clinton; two grandchildren, Ethan Davis and Klaire DeCoster; special little buddy, Cooper; two sisters, Deborah (Jeff) Forsyth of Swisher, IA and Darcy (Russ) Rayner of Walford, IA; his girlfriend, Cathi Bousselot of Clinton; many aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends.. He was preceded in death by his parents and his best friend, Cindy Heiar in 2011.

Following the service cremation rites will be accorded. Kit was born in Rock Ford, IL on November 13, 1976. He was raised by Harry Foley. He attended Clinton Community College. Kit married Jessica Holmes on February 2, 2016 in Albany. He was the Maintenance Manager at UFP Technologies in Clinton. Kit enjoyed a quiet life at home with his family, fishing, and following the Minnesota Vikings. Kit is survived by his wife Jessica; three sons, Brett, Hunter and Alexzander Wilson all of Camanche; a daughter, Aubrelle Wilson of Albany; a brother, Jose Wilson; three sisters, Tina Wilson, Katrina Hernandez and Anastasia Gallardo Hernandez; step siblings, Naomi, Todd, Dana, Nancy, William and Crystal and mother and father-in-law, Deb and Tony Shoenwolf of Thomson, IL. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jesus Hernandez.

Clinton, IA Mary Bernadine “Bernie” McDermott, age 96, of Clinton, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center North. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Saturday April 29, 2017 at Prince of Peace Parish. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM Friday at Prince of Peace Parish. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. The Knights of Columbus will serve as casket bearers. The Pape Funeral Home is assisting the family. Mary was born in DeWitt, Iowa on May 3, 1920, the daughter of Joseph Patrick and Mary Agnes (Ritter) Donahue. She attended Unity School, a one room school house in rural DeWitt and graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in DeWitt. She married Donald J. McDermott on January 25, 1943 in DeWitt. After 65 years of marriage, Mary’s beloved Donald passed away in 2008. Mary was very proud of being the first female elevator operator in Clinton at the Wilson building. She had been employed at Beez-Mousel in Lyons and later with the Clerk of the District Court at the Clinton County Courthouse. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, Prince of Peace Parish and Moose Lodge #63. She enjoyed researching her Irish heritage, camping, dancing, boating, traveling and wintering in Arizona with her husband in their motor home. Mary is survived by two children; Kathleen Ann Wilson and Gary and his wife Cindy Mootz McDermott all of Clinton; four grandchildren, Brian Wilson, Angela Wilson Coleman, Shawn McDermott and Gail Eddy; six great grandchildren, Robert and Chloe Wilson, Michael McDermott Graves, and Cassie, Curtis and Cate Krupa; a great-great granddaughter Coral Graves and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers, Joseph, Donald, Gerald and Francis; a sister Margaret Naughton; a sister in infancy and her son in law Robert Wilson.

A celebration of life will take place from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Saturday at the Moose Lodge. Beverly was born in Clinton on June 5, 1948, the daughter of Michael and Thelma (Brewster) Sterbenz. She graduated from Northeast High School. She had been employed at A.D.M. and later at the Moose Lodge. She was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose #63. Beverly’s absolute pride and joy were her grandchildren and great grandson. She enjoyed bowling and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Beverly is survived by three children; Lori (Shawn) Maze of Albany, Deb Allen of Camanche and Greg Schroeder of Fulton; six grandchildren, Bram Judge (fiancé Stacia Hansen), Amber Maze, Austin Schroeder, Karlie Schroeder, Ashley Maze and Lukas Schroeder; a great grandson, Dawson Judge; four sisters, Marge Light of Bettendorf, Sue (Paul) Dykstra of Clinton, Linda (Kenny) Huling of Clinton and Mary (Chuck) Seyfert of Twin Falls, ID; five brothers, Don Sterbenz of Clinton, Jim (Marie) Sterbenz of Dixon, IA, Bob Sterbenz of Clinton, Bill (Pam) Sterbenz of DeWitt and Rick (Irma) Sterbenz of Germany and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son-in-law, Todd Allen.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at the Pape Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. until the service time Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Irenaeus Calvary Cemetery. Mary Ellen was born in Maquoketa, Iowa on June 1, 1944, the daughter of Cyril F. and Rosella (Teshak) Eckelberg. She graduated from Cardinal Community High School in Batavia, IL and later from Parson College in Fairfield, Iowa. She taught high school in Indianola and Ankeny, Iowa and was employed at Collis Company for 20 years. She participated in the Great River Ride, a horseback ride from Winnipeg, Canada to Lake Itasca, MN to New Orleans, a 6000 mile ride. Mary Ellen enjoyed archeology, Indian Culture and journalism. She wrote historical articles for the Clinton Herald and the historical book, Fr. Jean, Pioneer Priest. She was a member of the former St. Irenaeus Church, the Concerned Catholics and an assistant to Fr. Shepler. Mary Ellen is survived by a brother, Cy (Nancy) Eckelberg of Clinton; two sisters, Cecilia Ann White of Hannibal, MO and Bernadette Eckelberg of Muscatine. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Janice was born in Clinton on November 10, 1938, the daughter of Louis and Grace (Sorenson) Kirst. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1958. Janice married Robert Hake on July 11, 1958 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clinton. She had been employed at Ken’s Korner, Burpee Seed Company and Target. She was a former member of Zion Lutheran Church where she had taught Sunday school, and a member of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren, collecting Beanie Babies, watching TV, especially QVC, and being on the computer. Janice is survived by her husband, Robert; three sons, Mark (Kay) Hake of Clinton, Richard (Kathryn) Hake of Overland Park, KS and Jeffery (Beverly) Hake of Moulton, AL; ten grandchildren, Drew, Darron, Dolan, Benjamin, Austin, Jeffery, Jr., Jordan, Kristyn, Kyle and Kelsey; ten great grandchildren and two sisters, Jean (Walter) Austin of Lake Placid, FL and Joan Beyers of Elizabeth, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Lisa on August 23, 2010.

Pestka on April 11, 1959 in Clinton. Joan passed away in 1981. Bill had been employed at Nitron Company and at Chemplex, from where he retired after 18 years of service. He was a member of the former St. Boniface Church. He enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and watching Jeopardy. Bill is survived by two children; a daughter, Paulette (Randy) Lynch of Clinton; a son, Michael (Tracey) Miller of Slatington, PA; five grandchildren; Alicia Lynch, Daniel Weeks, Matthew Weeks, Keegan Miller and Seamus Miller.
