Sr. Marie de Lourdes, OSF - 92

Clinton, Iowa Sister Marie de Lourdes, OSF passed away at the Alverno on August, 31, 2016, after a short illness. A Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, September 6th at The Canticle. Visitation will be from 4-8 PM, with a Rosary at 4 and a Scripture Service at 6 on Monday, September 5th, 2016 at The Canticle. Burial will be at St. Irenaeus Cemetery. Sister Marie de Lourdes (Bertha Louise) was born on May 14, 1924, in Peoria, Illinois, the only child of Jesse D. and Frances E. (Miller) Davenport. A convert to Catholicism, she was baptized at St. Paul Church, Burlington, Iowa, on June 15, 1944. Bertha attended elementary and high school in Roseville, Illinois, graduating in 1943. After graduation, she entered Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Burlington, Iowa. She received her Diploma in Nursing in 1946, and her R.N. in 1947. She held nursing certification for Iowa and Illinois. Bertha attended Mount St. Clare College after entering the congregation of the Sisters of St. Francis at Clinton, Iowa, on September 8, 1948. She received the name Marie de Lourdes at her reception June 20, 1949. She made her first profession on August 12, 1951, and her final profession on August 13, 1954 Sister Marie de Lourdes ministered in the health care field for 28 years. In Clinton, she served at the former Mount Alverno Home for the Aged in 1951-1952. For fifteen years, she served as a general duty nurse in health care facilities then owned and staffed by the Clinton Franciscan congregation; St. Francis Hospital, Grinnell, Iowa; Mercy Hospital, Burlington, Iowa; and St. Francis Hospital, Macomb, Illinois. In 1967, she was assigned to Freeport, Grand Bahama, in the Bahama Islands where she served in public health nursing until retiring from active nursing duty in 1979. She returned to Mount St. Clare Convent and served for more than 20 years as driver for Sisters living in Clinton. She moved with her Franciscan sisters to their new residence, The Canticle, in 1997 and retired there in 2003 where she greeted people and answered the phone in the reception office. She was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by the members of her Clinton Franciscan Family.

Clinton, Iowa Carole L. Lueders, age 80, of Clinton passed away Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center North surrounded by her loving family following a courageous and hard-fought two-year battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Zion Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday at the Pape Funeral Home and from 9:30 A.M. until the service time Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Casket bearers will be her grandchildren. Honorary casket bearers will be her great-grandchildren. Carole was born in the doctor’s car on the way to the hospital in Clinton on July 2, 1936, the youngest child of George and Clara (Stenzel) Schroeder. She graduated from Clinton High School and attended Mt. St. Clare College. She married Robert “Bob” Lueders on June 17, 1956 in Clinton. Bob passed away on October 13, 1996. Carole retired from Clinton Community Schools. Carole was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Carole’s greatest joy was her family. Her life revolved around them. She loved following her children and grandchildren’s school and sporting activities of which there were many over the years. Carole had a sassy sense of humor that was evident to everyone who knew her. She enjoyed going to the YWCA, lunching with the Lyons group and her close friends Shirley, Randa, and Judy. She could often be seen driving her Mustang convertible around town. She never missed Dancing with the Stars and The Bachelor/ette and the Cubs. She and her husband Bob loved to dance and could clear the dance floor. She devotedly served as the team mom for Bob’s Clinton High School wrestling team, helping behind the scenes in whatever role necessary for forty years. Carole is survived by five children; Jeffrey (Melody) Lueders of Evergreen, CO, Kristine (Robert) Schneeberger of Clinton, Kelley (Jim) Hummel of Long Grove, IA, J.D. (Kim) Lueders of Clinton and Kasey (Eric) Jennings of Clinton; 14 grandchildren, Lars (McKenzie), Chelsey (Brandon), Kellen, Marcus (Nicole), Dylan (Maddy), Karly, Savanah, Eric (Amy), Jared, Cole (Jackie), Spencer (Bri), Luke, Brady and Piper; 9 great-grandchildren, London, Tripp, Miles, Holden, Caitlin, Megan, Owen, Quincey, and Alivia; a brother, Rodney (Chick) Schroeder of Sarasota, FL and a sister-in-law, Phyllis (Randy) Meinert of Davenport. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a grandson, Trey; four brothers, Clifford, Wesley, Gordon and Orlin, and a sister, Arlene. Clinton, Iowa Jane T. Van Horn, age 92 of Clinton, passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 surrounded by her family. A Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at the Church of the Visitation in Camanche. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday at the Pape Funeral Home and from 9:30 A.M. until the service time Saturday at the church. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Jane was born on March 19, 1924 in Clinton, the daughter of John and Theresa (McGonegle) Clark. She was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School and after graduating she went to work for Interstate Power. Jane moved to Langley, VA to join her sister Mary and her husband John. She went to work at Langley Field. Following her time at Langley, she moved to Washington D.C., where she took a job as secretary at the Pentagon during WWII which required her to handle top secret documents. While in Washington D.C. she met her future husband Herman Van Horn and they were married January 27, 1950. Jane and Herman moved back to Clinton in 1951 with their first child, Deborah in tow. They had four more children and she was a domestic engineer until taking a job with W.T. Grants in Clinton, working in the candy department, working with her beloved chocolate. After spending time at Grants, she went to work for Spiegel Catalog in Clinton. Jane moved from Spiegel’s to work at Sears Catalog until she found her final and favorite job, working at J.C. Penney’s in Clinton, starting in the catalog department and working her way up to catalog department manager until the store closed and she retired in 1998, leaving the co-workers that she loved and favorite customers behind. During her retirement, Jane and Herman spent their time vacationing by car all across the United States. Her favorite vacation spot was Maine where she enjoyed many lobster dinners. She also looked forward to visiting her favorite child Jim in Maryland. Jane took care of Herman during his time of need until he passed away in 2007. During her later years, Jane spent time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren sharing with them many stories of her time spent in Virginia and Washington D.C. and trips to New York City. Jane also made sure they all knew of her Irish heritage and the pride she had in being Irish. This gentle soul will be truly missed by all. Jane is survived by five children; Deborah (Dennis) Wulf of Camanche, John (Jane) Van Horn, David Van Horn and Stephen (Liz) Van Horn all of Clinton and Jim (Karen) Van Horn of Severn, MD; six grandchildren; Jenny, Cindi, Krista, Eric, Matt and Heather; step-grandchildren; Michele, Mark, Lisa (Brian) and Christopher; three great grandchildren; Macey, Madelynn and Kaden; step-great grandchildren; Aleisha, Austin, Noah, Ben, Alex, CJ, Lula, Shannon, Emma and Paige. Clinton, Iowa Ronald Dean Wynkoop age 64, of Clinton, passed away Saturday, August 13, 2016 at the University of Iowa Hospitals after a short, but heroic battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at the Pape Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 17th funeral home. Honorary pallbearers will be Harry Henzen, Harold Hosette, Bill Hosette, Dan McGrath, Anthony (Tony) Wynkoop and Joe Hartman. Ron was born in Clinton on December 5, 1951, the son of Herbert Dean and Ruby May (Kinkaid) Wynkoop. Ron married Jane Ellen McGrath on August 30, 1985 in Sabula, Iowa. He worked at Dairy Pak for 35 years. Ron’s favorite pastime was riding his Harley with his wife, his brother and friends. He enjoyed bowling, having bowled 300 games, and had been of member of the Clinton Bowling Association and the 700 Club. Ron is survived by his wife Jane; a son Jason Dean (Brandy) Wynkoop of Fulton; a daughter, Andrea (Tod) Thieman of Lincoln, NE; five grandchildren, Maddy, Whitney, Brett, Tyler and Kannon and his beloved mother-in-law, Mary Jane Whalen of Clinton. Ron was the 5th born of eight children. He siblings include brothers Richard A, William D. (Koop) and David L. (Sue) Wynkoop, all of Clinton; sisters, Deana (Gerry) La Shelle of Clinton, Kathy Hilgendorf of Fulton, Susan (Richard) Herrmann of Clinton and Marcia Gillis of Cedar Rapids. Other survivors include many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and cousins, his sister-in-law Sharon McGrath (Mark Mapes) of Carmichael, CA and his brother-in-law, Richard (Deb) McGrath of Polk City, IA. He will be missed by his companions, Chopper, Sasha and Harley. He was preceded in death by his parents and a special niece, Renee Wynkoop. Clinton, Iowa Margaret H. Wandler, age 87 of Clinton, passed away peacefully in her home on Thursday, August 11, 2016. A grave side service will be at 10:30 AM on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life luncheon which will be held at 11:30 at Rastrelli’s in Clinton on Saturday, September 3, 2016. Margaret (Marge) was born Margaret Harriet Burrows on March 1, 1929 in Clinton. She was the daughter of Frank and Ida (Olsen). She was a graduate of Lyon’s High School in 1947. After graduation she went to work for Dupont in the Test Lab where she met her future husband, Richard (Dick) Wandler. Marge and Dick were married on March 20, 1954 in Jacksonville, AL where Dick was stationed in the Army. They were married for over 62 years. Marge lived in Clinton for the majority of her life, spending many winters in the Phoenix area visiting her son and family and summers visiting her daughter and family. She loved to travel; she and Dick completed over a dozen cruises around the world. With her Danish background, traveling to her Grandparent’s home in Bornholm, Denmark, was one of her most memorable experiences. Marge was raised in the Lutheran Church. She attended the former St Stephen’s Lutheran in Clinton for most of her life, and in later years she attended Chancy Lutheran as well as the Northside Church of God. Marge was active with the Red Hats. Marge will be missed by all. She is survived by her husband, Richard Wander, two children, Molly (Craig) Cook of Ridgefield, CT and Kevin (Judy) Wandler of Phoenix, AZ, four grandchildren Matthew (Melissa) Wandler, Ryan Wandler, Alyssa Cook and Amy Cook, and one great grandchild, Lucas Wandler. She was preceded in death by her parents and Florence, a sister.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, August 11, 2016 at Clinton Lawn Cemetery. The Pape Funeral Home is assisting the family. Edith was born in Clinton on May 21, 1929. She married Darwin ‘Darby’ Malone. Darby passed away on April 29, 2003. Edith had been employed at Woolworth’s. She was a member of the Clinton Community Christian Church. She had a lifelong commitment to physical and mentally challenged individuals in Clinton County. Edith is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Wells of Clinton and special friends, Jim and Debby Manion and their children Bharati and Swati of Clinton. She was preceded in death by her husband.

Fulton, Illinois Bette Lou McCartney age 86 of Fulton, passed away Friday, August 5, 2016 at her home. Cremation rites have been accorded. A visitation will be held from 2:30 to 4:00 P.M. Saturday, August 13, 2016 at the Pape Funeral Home. A memorial service will begin at 4:00 P.M. Bette was born in Davenport on October 4, 1929, the daughter of Charles Edward and Mabel (Kinnamon) Smith. She graduated from Lyons High School and received a double major in Education and Sociology from the University of Iowa, where she marched with the University of Iowa Band in Dwight Eisenhower’s inaugural parade. She served with the U.S. Navy in the WAVE’s in the Personnel Department. Bette married Jerry D. McCartney on September 7, 1963 in Cedar Falls. Bette did social work in St. Louis and Des Moines and later taught for 20 years in the Fulton School District. Bette had been a member of the Fulton Presbyterian Church. She loved attending all her grandchildren’s sports and school activities. She had been a Girl Scout Leader and Director of the YMCA in Iowa City and a member of the WA-TAN-YE. She had been a participant and supporter of Relay for Life, enjoyed dinner theaters, big band music, visiting and talking with people and following the Iowa Hawkeye’s and Cubs. Bette is survived by two daughters; Kim Schaffer of Camanche and Kelly McCartney of Fulton and four grandchildren, Aaron McCartney, Rachel Wilson, Ethan Schaffer and Emma Schaffer. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Arlene Bennett and three brothers; Ed, Jack and her twin Bill.

Bill was born on October 14, 1950 in St. Mary’s, Ohio, the son of Paul and Hazel (Dressback) Heil. He was with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Bill had been a self-employed barber. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in St. Mary’s and attended Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clinton. He was an accomplished artist specializing in drawings. Bill is survived by three sisters; Dorothy “Dot” Reed of Papillion, NE; Cindy (Richard) Urban of Morriston, FL and Becky (Mike) Graves of Clinton; several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mary Jane Rickerl was born on May 22, 1923 in Clinton, the daughter of John “Leo” and Mae (Cook) Lentz. She attended St. Mary’s schools and graduated in 1941. Mary married Walter F. Rickerl on November 20, 1945. Walter passed away on August 21, 1993. Mary was employed at A.C. Nielson’s for 25 years and also worked at the Alverno Health Care facility for many years. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish. Mary is survived by six children, Janet (Michael) Graf and Kevin Rickerl of Clinton, Mark Rickerl and Ann Rickerl of Low Moor, Kathleen (Bob) Rickerl of Madison, WI and Richard (Susan) Rickerl of Reynoldsburg, OH; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers; a sister and many nieces and nephews.
