David K. Johnson age 79 of Clinton, passed away Wednesday Jan. 20, 2016 at Mercy North Medical Center, Clinton. A memorial service will be held 1:00 PM Saturday Jan. 23rd at the Pape Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Saturday 11:00 AM until the service hour at the funeral home. Cremation rites have been accorded. Following the memorial service a luncheon will be held at the Immaculate Conception Church in Fulton, IL. A burial will be held at a later date. David was born on May 19, 1936 in Clinton, the son of Clarence and Lillian (Schlemme) Johnson. He married Mary Lou Hilgendorf on Aug. 4, 1956 in Clinton. David worked at the Clinton Standard Brands, (ADM) in the utility processing and refinery for over 41 years; retiring in 2000. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, Fulton.
David enjoyed raising and showing his St. Bernard dogs, attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, and working in his yard. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and L.A. Dodgers fan. David was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He loved his family dearly, and more than anything, enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren grow-up.
David is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Johnson of Clinton; three children, Richard (Michaele) Johnson, Cathy (Rod) Eversoll, and Ronald Johnson all of Clinton; five grandchildren, Sean (Annette) Johnson, Allie Eversoll, Ethan (Jennifer) Woods, Cody (Sarah) Johnson, and Courtney Johnson; 11 great grandchildren; his brother, Robert Johnson of Clinton; and his man’s best friend, Belle. He was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother, Richard, a brother, Jack, an infant sister, Doris, and a grandson, Jason Johnson.

Thomas J. “Tom” Klinkner, age 85, of Clinton passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at his home. A Mass will be celebrated at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, January 23, 2016 in Prince of Peace Parish. Tom was born in Clinton on October 3, 1930, the son of George and Helen (Keogh) Klinkner. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1948 and then attended Clinton Junior College. Tom married Janet “Jan” Crumley on June 9, 1956 at St. Mary’s Church. He served with the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He retired as Chief Yard Clerk from the Chicago Northwestern Railroad in 1992 after 43 years. Tom was a member of Prince of Peace Parish, AMVETS, Loyal Order of Moose, NARVE and the Clinton Ecumenical Council.
Tom is survived by his wife, Jan; two daughters, Laura (Ken) Konieczny of Tinley Park, IL and Diane (Dan) Devine of Garland, TX; a son, Philip Klinkner of New Hartford, NY; four grandchildren, Marie (John) Kelly, Megan Devine and Honorine and Grant Klinkner; a brother, Charles Klinkner of Clinton and a special niece, Kara Marr and family of Clinton. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Kate and Estelle and a brother George William in infancy. Memorials may be made to the Prince of Peace Building Fund. Dale Ruth Bertramsen age 85 of Clinton, passed away Tuesday January 19, 2016 at Harbor Crest Nursing Home in Fulton. Dale was born in Clinton on May 9, 1930, the daughter of Anton and Esther (Nissen) Bertramsen. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1948. She was employed at E.I. DuPont for 37 years, in the Order and Invoice Section, as purchaser of essential materials, cashier, the traffic department and later as the plant manager’s confidential secretary. She retired in 1985. Dale was a member of Friends of the Library and Zion Lutheran Church where she served on the call committee and church council as well as other committees. She was also a life time member of the Iowa State Women’s Bowling Association serving for 24 years, including 9 as President, and the Clinton Women’s Bowling Association where she served as President and Treasurer. Dale bowled a 300 game in 1963 and at that time it had been 34 years since a woman had bowled a 300 in the state of Iowa. She enjoyed bowling, golfing and ceramics.
Dale is survived by her dear friend Beverly Putman with whom she shared a home for 60 years, two step-sisters; Carol Jean (George) Chalgren of Macon, MO and Marilyn (Richard) Bjornas of Bay Minette, AL, three nieces; Sara (Allan) Taylor of Forney, TX, Debra (Bob) Steiner of Fairfield, CA and Sheila (Charlie) Rowland-Thornton of Salmon, ID, a nephew Eric Bertramsen of Ruidoso, NM, a great nephew Brandon Taylor, a special friend, and pen pal of 70 years Doris (Tony) Verity of Wales, England and many other nieces and nephews. Elaine was born on May 27, 1940 in Sanborn, MN, the daughter of Orville and Alma (McClelland) McDaniel. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1958.
She worked at John Deere in East Moline, IL and was at home personal caregiver for many years. She attended Zion Lutheran Church. She enjoyed playing a good hand of 500 cards and playing bingo. She had a great smile and was a loving caring person to her family and friends.

Robert “Bob” Morse Seger died after a brief illness on January 12, 2016 at University of Iowa Hospitals, surrounded by his loving family. He was 89 years old. Bob was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 16, 1926. He was the son of Earl Fenton and Ruth Leola Morse Seger, and was raised in East Lansing, Michigan. He graduated from East Lansing High School in 1945, after which he worked for Fisher Body in Lansing, Michigan. He went on the road with the Slout Players Tent Show for two seasons before being drafted into the United States Army and serving in Virginia and Augsburg, Germany in the 43rd Infantry Battalion of the National Guard. He attended Michigan State University and graduated from Western Michigan University at Kalamazoo in 1956 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and Library Science. He earned his Master’s Degree in Library Science from the University of Michigan in 1961.
Bob met Lois Ann Elliott in college and they married on September 25, 1956 in Elmira, Illinois. Bob worked from 1956 – 59 at the St. Clair County Library in Port Huron Michigan. From 1960 – 1967 he worked at the Presque Isle County Library in Rogers City, Michigan, where he originated the Northland County Library System. For 25 years, Bob directed the Clinton Public Library, founding the Clinton County Library System, and retired in December 1992. During these years, Bob served as a member of many state and regional library boards and committees.
Bob led an active retirement serving Riverside Presbyterian Church as treasurer and elder, and subsequently at First United Presbyterian Church as elder and session member. Bob was an active member of Kiwanis in Clinton, and maintained a perfect attendance record. He served as President of Kiwanis in 1992, and was awarded life membership status in 1995. Bob and his friend Dick Huyck organized Partnership Way, a study group which met monthly for ten years, centered on non-violence and community improvement. Bob also served as a founding board member and docent at the Sawmill Heritage Museum. He also served as an election judge for many years. Bob loved the color red and chocolate in any form. He had a quirky sense of humor and was known for his groaner jokes. In his younger years, he enjoyed bicycling and camping. He took his family on many camping and summer road trips. In his later years, he enjoyed playing games on the computer.
Bob is survived by his wife Lois; daughters, Ellen of Mesa, Arizona, Janet (Steve Pera) of Omaha, Nebraska, and Nancy of Minneapolis, Minnesota; grandchildren, Sophia and Eric Seger-Pera of Omaha; and sister-in-law, Geraldine Lednicky Seger of Lake City, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dean Warren Seger, and sister, Aulene Delight Seger Gaige. According to his wishes, Bob’s corneas were donated upon his death. In lieu of flowers, donations to First United Presbyterian Church or the Sawmill Museum in Clinton would be appreciated.

Beatrice was born on March 12, 1921 in Clinton, the daughter of Helen Milder. She had married Bruce Morgan in 1957 in California. She later married Joseph Whalen on Sept. 17, 1988 in Clinton, he precedes her in death. She was a cook for the Clinton YWCA for many years. She is a member of Prince of Peace Parish, Clinton.
Beatrice is survived by six cousins, a nephew, Scott, and special friends, Bobbie Schloss and Brooke Richardson. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Tom. The family would like to thank all her caregivers who provided her with loving care over the years.

Doris was born in Maquoketa on November 28, 1932, the daughter of Reese and Augusta (Mann) Taylor. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1951. Doris married Gerald Determan on October 18, 1952 at St. Irenaeus Church in Clinton. She had been employed at Northwestern Bell and later at P.F.C. Doris was a member of Prince of Peace Parish and the Ladies of the Moose. She enjoyed her family, dancing, camping and traveling.
Doris is survived by her husband, Gerald; seven sons; Gary (Mary) Determan, Ken (Lynn) Determan, Kevin (Deena) Determan, Pat (Ellen) Determan, Dennis (Beth) Determan and Tim (Shari) Determan all of Clinton and Mike (Taryn) Determan of Camanche; a daughter-in-law, Deb Determan of Camanche; 27 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Phillip in 2010; a great grandson, Liam; two sisters, Dolly and Garnet and three brothers, Lester, Don and Phil.

Susan Maxine Unger was born on February 16, 1943 in Clinton, the daughter of Thomas and Cora (Powers) Lawlor. She attended St. Mary’s High School. On July 10, 1965 Susan married Richard “Jack” Wharff in Clinton. Jack died December 25, 1969. She then married Roland Unger on August 24, 1974 in Illinois. Roland died October 26, 2009. Susan worked as a case manager at Kreider’s Services for over 30 years. She was a mother to all. Susan enjoyed fishing, music, dancing and attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, even coaching one of their baseball teams.

Alec was born in Clinton on August 29, 1984, the son of Donald and Debra (Petersen) Horst. He graduated from Northeast High School in 2003 and received an Industrial Wiring Degree from NICC in Calmer, Iowa. He was employed with John Deere at the Worldwide Product Development Plant in Silvis, IL. Alec was a member and had been confirmed at Elvira Zion Lutheran Church. He enjoyed working the family farm, skiing, golfing, skeet shooting, and following the Iowa Hawkeye‘s.
