Susan T. Carmody age 64 of Clinton, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at the Alverno Health Care Facility. A Mass will be celebrated at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, July 4, 2015 at Prince of Peace Parish. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday, July 3, 2015 at the Pape Funeral Home and from 1:00 P.M. until the service time Saturday at the church. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Sue was born in Clinton on December 16, 1950, the daughter of William and Edna (Hill) Killean. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1969. She received her AA Degree from Clinton Community College and attended The University of Iowa. Sue married Robert “Bob” Carmody on October 2, 1971 at St. Mary’s Church. She had been employed at Eastern Iowa Community College where she retired as Assistant Dean of Admissions. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish. Sue enjoyed cooking, photography, calligraphy, playing the piano, gardening and walking.
Sue is survived by her husband Bob; a brother, Ronald (Shirley) Kelly of The Villages, FL; three sisters, Phyllis Hansen of Arlington, WA, Jeanne Kerens of Tampa, FL and Jan Ambrose of Lake Suzy, FL and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Gloria Lee Hammond, 81, died Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at the Maquoketa Care Center, Maquoketa, Iowa. Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 7th from 4:00 to 7:30 P.M. and Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at 10:30 A.M. Both will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 250 S. Gloria Lee Kieffer, the daughter of Ardis and Raymond Kieffer, was born May 2, 1934 in Preston, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Dell Hammond on June 24, 1954 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Preston, Iowa. She was a long time member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Delmar, Iowa. Gloria held various jobs throughout her young life in positions as a School Aid and Certified Nursing Assistant. She spent her life caring for others. Her cheerful voice, positive attitude and sense of humor will be dearly missed.
Some of Gloria’s many hobbies included her love of nature, gardening, fishing, cooking, and caring for her beloved pets. Gloria adored her family, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, in laws, nieces and nephews and loved spending time with her friends. Survivors include her son Mark (Debbi) Hammond, Rockford, IL, daughter’s Dellanne (Robert) Moore, Cedar Rapids, IA and Mary (Allen) Rus, Eldridge, IA. Her grandchildren Joseph (Madison, WI) and David Hammond, at home, Jacob Moore (Center Point, IA), Ethan (Kansas City, MO), Adrienne and Jared Rus at home and her brother, Glen Kieffer, Maquoketa, IA.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Dell, sister, Darla Burken and her parents, Ardis and Raymond Kieffer. Memorials can be made to the University of Iowa REACH Program.

Andrew T. “Bucky” Buckingham, age 55 of Clinton, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at Genesis East Hospital in Davenport. A Celebration of Life will be held from 12:30 to 2:30 P.M. on Sunday, July 5, 2015 at the 8th St. Inn. Burial will be at a later date. The Pape Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Bucky was born in Milwaukee on March 22, 1960, the son of Henry and Edythe (Trott) Buckingham. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1978 and received his mechanics training from Scott Community College. He had been employed with 24/7 Shell in Clinton. Bucky served with the Iowa National Guard for 26 years, retiring as a Staff Sergeant. He had 21 years of joy spending his life with Jill Pearson and her children. Bucky enjoyed spending time with his friends at the 8th St. Inn. He was a master of trivia and an avid sports fan, following the Oakland Raiders and Colorado Avalanche.
Bucky is survived by three step-children; Andy (Vicky Petersen) Pearson of Camanche, Wendy (Chuck) Buikema of Clinton and Audrey (David) Yarolem of Clinton; nine step-grandchildren, Brian, Mariyah, Aleigha, Aaron, Cayden, Kasey, Tyler, Amanda and Aleigha; a sister-in-law, Jamie (Clyde Graff) Dornbush of Clinton; two brother-in-laws, Jerry (Kara) Barrette and John (Mary) Barrette both of Clinton; his mother-in-law, Dolores Barrette of Clinton and his best friend of 48 years, Randy Weller of Camanche. He was preceded in death by his parents and the love of his life, Jill Pearson.

Shirley A. Hoover, age 86 of Clinton, passed away Friday, June 26, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center North. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday July 1, 2015 at the Pape Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Shadow Hoover, Jared Lingle, Tom Hoover, Mike and Ted Healless and Brian Vogel.
Shirley was born in Clinton on March 25, 1929, the daughter of Merrill and Helen (Bertelsen) Healless. She graduated from Lyons High School in 1947 and from Clinton Community College in 1949. Shirley married Allen J. Hoover on September 24, 1950 in Clinton. Allen passed away in 1971. Shirley had worked in the offices of the Collis Company and later, as a secretary with the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency from where she retired. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where she belonged to the sewing circle and had volunteered at many church functions. She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge.
Shirley is survived by three children; David (Joyce) Hoover of Carol Stream, IL, Patricia (Ray) Lingle of Chelan, WA and Larry Hoover of Lanark; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and sister, Alice Koenes of Clinton and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Tex Healless and a sister, Jean Vogel. Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church.

Norma L. Smith, age 89, of Manchester, Iowa, formerly of Clinton, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 26, 2015 at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. Norma was born in Clinton on July 8, 1925, the daughter of Lyle and Ruth (Riggs) Hansen. She married Lorrin E. Smith on July 9, 1941 in Clinton. Lorrin passed away on April 26, 2007. Norma was an Avon Lady for many years. She had also been employed with Petersen –Harned Von Maur. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she was active in the choir and Bible study, and was a past President of the Gamma Zeta chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and a former member of the Loyal Order of Moose and Eagles’ Club. Norma loved spending time with her family and she truly loved her dogs, who meant everything to her. She enjoyed cooking, baking birthday cakes for her family, square dancing, roller skating, camping, riding her bike, bird watching and swimming and was a member of the Polywogs Swim Club in her early years.
Norma is survived by two children; Leo (Sheila) Smith of Manchester and Julie Cook (Dave Dean) of Clinton; 11 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Larry and Lyle and three brothers, Ralph, Russell and Warren Hansen.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, June 26, 2015 at Faith Lutheran Church, Andover. Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. until the service time Friday at the church. Bruce was born on the family farm in Clinton County on November 20, 1924, the son of Melvin and Aledia (Biss) Wilson. He graduated from Miles High School. He served with the U.S. Army, in the European Theater, in Sicily and Italy, during W.W. II. Bruce married Alice Margaret Kruse on February 15, 1948 in Preston. Alice passed away in December of 1993. He later married Delores “Dee” Sander on June 25, 1996. He farmed his entire life in the Andover and Teeds Grove area. Bruce was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Miles American Legion Post 677 and the Bellevue Masonic Lodge #51. Bruce was very proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved to get his hands in the soil with his yardwork, tending his strawberries and gardening. He was a John Deere man who enjoyed buying and trading lawn mowers and vehicles. He enjoyed bowling, square dancing and taking a drive.
Bruce is survived by his wife Dee, three children, Susan (Jim) Williams of DeWitt, Brent (Sonja) Wilson of Andover and Barth (Julie) Wilson of Papillion, NB; six grandchildren, David (Lauren) Williams, Jake (Emily) Williams, Kristine (Elliott) Pennock, Leta (Josh Zinder) Wilson, Tait Wilson and Brittney Wilson; three great grandchildren, Adelynn, Dallas and Layla; three step-children, Linda (Don) Kraus of Bluffton, OH, Gary (Vicky) Sander of Andover and Karen (Al) Heath of South Milwaukee, WI; five step-grandchildren; 11 step-great grandchildren and two brothers, Stuart (Jeanette) Wilson and Rodney (Lola) Wilson both of Miles. David was born on April 9, 1948 in Clinton, IA, the son of Milton and Ann Mae (Gammon) Newsom. He married Sharon Mettler on Sept. 4, 1993 in Clinton. David was a self-employed carpenter most of his life. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, singing, playing games, and watching TV; and his dogs, Luke and Bruno.
David is survived by his wife, Sharon of Clinton; five children, Kristi Jo (Ryan) Tumey of LeClaire, IA, Lori Newsom of Corpus Christi, TX, Heather (Joseph) Dehner of Morrison, IL, Cody Thomas of Clinton, and Cole Thomas of Davenport; 13 grandchildren; two brothers, John Newsom of Clinton and Wayne Newsom of Goose Lake; an uncle, Roger (Gert) Gammon of Clinton; and several nieces & nephews. Helene was born on Nov. 17, 1925 in Hazelcrest, IL, the daughter of Uros and Mika (Mrynak) Sorak. She married Michael Vulich on Feb. 12, 1949 in Chicago, IL; he died in 1983. Helene was a homemaker and member of the Church of the Open Door. She enjoyed sewing, bible study, and crossword puzzles.
Helene is survived by her two sons, Jeff Vulich of Clinton and Evan (Lori) Vulich of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Lindsey, Brittany, Michael, and Aaron; two great grandchildren, Layla Jane and James; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Susan in 2012, seven sisters, and three brothers.

Molly was born in Clinton on January 27, 1945, the daughter of Emil and Ethel Mae (Hansen) Seeser. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1963. Molly married Mert Schepler on June 7, 1964 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clinton. Molly and her husband farmed near Bryant for many years and she also drove a school bus for the Northeast School District for 27 years. She was a very active member of Ascension Lutheran Church where she served as a member and past president of the church council, taught Sunday school and Bible Study. She enjoyed bowling, camping, fishing, trips to Minnesota and Wisconsin and especially spending time with her family and grandchildren in following all their sports and activities.
Survivors include her husband, Mert; four children, Dawn and Mark King of Marion, IA, Randy and Theresa Schepler of Hubert, NC, Shelly and Mike Schultz of Clinton and Amanda Schepler of Bryant; ten grandchildren; a great grandson, Eli Allen King; three sisters, Nancy (Bill) Simpson of Florida, Grace (Vern) Galant of Clinton and Kathy (David) Burken of Clinton; a brother, David (Mary) Seeser of Clinton and many nieces and nephews. Bill was born on June 8, 1930 in Clinton, the son of August and Gladys (Poole) Schmidt.
He served in the US Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He married Rosella Jensen on Nov. 25, 1954 in DeWitt, IA. He worked as a mechanic at Climax Engines in Clinton for many years and later for Kunau Implement in Preston. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW, the Good Sam Camping Club, and was an avid antique collector.
Bill is survived by his wife, Rosella Schmidt of Clinton; three children, Roxann (Jesse) Cram of Bellevue, IA, Bonnie (Vince) McMahon of Ocklawaha, FL, and Bill (Jamie) Schmidt, Jr. of Miles, IA; 8 grandchildren, Jennifer, Vince, Crystal, Jolene, Mordecai, Tony, Steele, and Paige; and 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Julie in 2008, a son, Jeffery in 1963, three brothers, and a sister.
