Clinton, Iowa R.D. “Ron” Kokemuller age 67 of Clinton, passed away Sunday Oct. 8, 2017 at The Alverno. Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial services will be held 6:30 PM Friday Oct. 13th at the Pape Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Friday 4:30 PM until the service hour at the funeral home. He owned and operated the Glass Shed/Cycle Shed in Clinton for many years. Ron was a member of Clinton City Council, Clinton Car Club, Clinton Gun Club, Riverboat Days Committee, and the Mid-Continent Railway Museum. Ron is survived by his three daughters, Brianne Kokemuller of Prophetstown, IL, Amanda (Jeff) Stanek of Altoona, PA, and Catherine Kokemuller of Kalamazoo, MI ; two grandchildren, Vaida and Freddie; his sister, Janet (Ron) Scott of Pleasant Valley, MO; his brother Roger (Sharon) Kokemuller of Keokuk, IA; three nieces and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Brent, and a sister, Linda.

Clinton, Iowa Bernard I. “Bernie” Wanzek, age 69 of Clinton, passed away Thursday, October 5, 2017 at the University of Iowa Hospitals. A Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at Prince of Peace Parish. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday October 6th at the Pape Funeral Home. Burial will be St. Boniface Cemetery with military rites accorded by the Preston American Legion. Bernie was born in Clinton on April 27, 1948, the son of Joseph and Mildred (Boehmer) Wanzek. He graduated from Preston High School in 1966. He attended Clinton Community College. Bernie served with the United States Army in Vietnam from January 1969 to January 1970. He married Verna Schaefer on January 10, 1970 in Clinton. Bernie was employed at E.I. DuPont, retiring in 2014. He also owned and operated BVL Quick Shop in Clinton for several years. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish and the Preston American Legion. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities. Bernie was an avid hunter, outdoorsman, and Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed photography, putting in food plots and going to Iowa Hawkeye football games with his grandson Hunter. Bernie is survived by his wife Verna; his daughter Lisa (Dan) Collins of Eldridge; two grandchildren, Hunter and Riley; two sisters, Mary Wimpey of Bowling Green, KY and Jacinta (Steve) Clark of Wichita, KS; four brothers, Eymard (Donna) Wanzek of Clinton, Gerard Wanzek of Preston, Joseph (Joan) Wanzek of Urbandale, IA and Raymond Wanzek of Preston and several nieces and nephews. She married Richard Cook on Nov. 6, 1948 in Baltimore, MD. Together they had two daughters, Sandy and Linda. She worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Dixon in Clinton for many years. She later married Larry Dierks and together they ran Pine Rest Resort in Park Rapids, MN. She was a member of Chancy Lutheran Church, AMVETS Auxiliary, and Eagles Club Auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking, going for walks, and traveling. Fleda is survived by her daughter, Linda Hugunin of Clinton; two grandchildren, David (Wendy) and Shannon; two great grandchildren, Hunter and Owen; and a brother, Harry (Carol) Sanders of Kingsville, MD. She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Sandy.

Clinton, Iowa Bettie M. Guthrie, age 84 of Clinton, passed away Thursday, September 28, 2017 at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the Pape Funeral Home. Visitation will be from Noon until the service hour on Saturday the 7th. Burial will be at Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Bettie was born in St. Peter, IL on February 15, 1933, the daughter of Leslie and Mary (Haines) Pruett. She received her teaching degree from Southern Illinois University in Normal, IL and became a 2nd grade teacher. Bettie married David Guthrie on August 20, 1955 in Blue Mound, IL. David passed away September 1, 2013. Bettie also worked at J.C. Penny’s in Clinton for 21 years and Guzzardo’s Book Nook. She was a member of the Church of the Open Door and had many years of fellowship with the Evangelical Free bible study ladies. Bettie was a 30+ year member of the YWCA and enjoyed spending time with her “Penny Ladies.” She was an avid sports fan, cheering on the Bulls and the Cubs. Bettie is survived by her five children, Scott (Dana Weckesser) Guthrie of Baltimore, MD, Kristi Clark of Davenport, IA, Kellie (Richard) Mess, Kerrie (Mark) Reiland and Kimberly (Miguel) Dondiego all of Clinton; 13 grandchildren, Leslie Guthrie, Summer Clark, Charity Siglar, Isaiah Clark, Trinity Clark, Levi Clark, Whitney Mess, Katelin Mess, Morgan Duncombe, Mackenzie Zacholski, Madison Guthrie, Cameron Dondiego and Isabella Dondiego; 11 great-grandchildren, Kaylee Clark, Alexander Clark, Austin Simmons, Ezekiel Siglar, Lyra Siglar, Tavian Siglar, Taylor Metcalf, Henry Zacholski, Genevieve Zacholski, Kiersyn Duncombe and Jackson Duncombe; a sister Susan (Michael) Vegovisch of Clifton, IL; twin brothers Jerry (Carla) Pruett of Dallas, TX and Terry (Judy) Pruett of Columbia, MO; several nieces and nephews and a dear friend and fellow beloved grandmother, Linda Reiland of Clinton. Clinton, Iowa Karen L. Cossman, age 62 of Clinton, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at The Alverno Health Care Facility. In following Karen’s wishes her body has been donated to the University of Iowa Anatomy Department. A Mass will be celebrated at 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, September 26th at Prince of Peace Parish. The Pape Funeral Home is assisting the family. Karen was born in Clinton on March 11, 1955, the daughter of Leonard and Mary (McDermott) Cossman. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1973 and was an Art Major at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. She taught Art at Prince of Peace High School. Karen was a member of Prince of Peace Parish. She was an Associate of the Sisters of St. Francis. She attended daily Mass, was an avid reader and enjoyed antiquing. Karen is survived by three brothers and sister; Leonard (Fran) Cossman of Parkersburg, WV, Joe (Mary) Cossman of Fort Worth, TX, Mark Cossman of Des Moines and Beth (Paul) Krentz of Naperville, IL; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Warren C. Young age 90 of Clinton passed away Thursday, September 21, 2017, at his daughter’s home in Andalusia, IL. Cremation rites have been accorded. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 10:00-11:00 AM on Friday, September 29th at the Lyons United Methodist Church. A memorial service will begin at 11 AM on Friday. The Pape Funeral Home is assisting the family. Warren was born on April 20, 1927, in Clinton, IA, the son of Vernon and Edna (Fenzel) Young. He graduated from Lyons High School in 1945. He served with the U.S. Army during W.W. II. Warren married Margaret Oliver on February 14, 1948, in Clinton. Margaret passed away on April 25, 2015. Warren worked at E.I. DuPont in Clinton for over 38 years. He was a member of the Lyons Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, ice boating, and making bluebird and wood duck nesting boxes. Warren is survived by his three children, David (Carol) Young of Edgewood, NM, Karen Young of Waterloo, IA and Sue (Mike) Robinson of Andalusia, IL; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, James (Janice) Young of Clinton; and two sisters, Ramona Redman and Vernetta (Leigh) Goff both of Clinton. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Margaret, a son Douglas in 2007, and a great-grandson, Oliver Palmer. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.

He graduated from Clinton High School in 1954 and attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids. Chuck served in the Army National Guard. He married Faith Edenfield in 1963 in Elvira, she died in 1999. He later married Paula Ekland on Aug. 30, 2001 in Las Vegas. Chuck worked for E.I. DuPont in Clinton for over 37 years. He enjoyed lifting weights and was a member of the Clinton YMCA since the age of 5 years old until its closing. He loved talking to people, spending time with his grandchildren, and an avid Chicago Bears fan. All the kids in the family will remember him always having tootsie rolls for them. Chuck is survived by his wife, Paula Mallory of Clinton; two step-daughters, Malissa (Josh) Bevins of Cedar falls and Katie (Reg) White of Thibodaux, LA; four grandchildren, Hailey, Paige, Madison, and Liam. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Faith, and brother-in-law, Donald Ekland.

She married Edward Jones on August 20, 1949 in Clinton. Edward passed away December 27, 1991. She is survived by her two children; Michael (Mary) Jones and Deborah Markham both of Clinton.

Clinton, IA Donald (Don) Leo Hughes, age 87, of Bryant, Iowa, passed away Thursday, September 14, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa. Visitation will be held Sunday, September 17, 2017 from 2:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Pape Funeral Home, Clinton, Iowa. Prayers of the Rosary will be at 6:00 P.M. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, September 18, 2017, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Sugar Creek, Iowa. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bryant, Iowa. Pallbearers will be Cade Hughes, Loran Jacobsen, Floyd Marx, Dustin Rickertsen, Eugene Roling, and Michael Thiede. Honorary Pallbearers will be his four brothers Paul, Robert, Thomas, and Dennis Hughes; Harvey Evers, and Reynold Platt. Don was born in Brookfield Township, rural Elwood, on July 28, 1930, to Leo and Madeline (LaFayette) Hughes. He quickly learned the value of hard work by helping on the farm, as well as being employed to earn money to support the family. He graduated from Elwood High School in 1948. A hardworking, rugged man, Don loved being outdoors and working the land. He began farming when corn was picked by hand and workers walked behind teams of horses and oxen. He greatly enjoyed farming in the Charlotte and Bryant areas his entire life. In addition to farming, Don bought a milk truck and drove 130 miles a day picking up milk cans. He then went to work at Clinton Engines foundry, where he lifted 25,000 pounds a day of lead pail molds and where he met the love of his life. Don married Linda Thiede on April 20, 1963, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Sugar Creek, Iowa. Both Don and Linda were strong supporters of education, and they graciously established an endowment fund for scholarships. Their generosity has helped many young people in Clinton and Jackson Counties to further their education. The things most important to Don were his faith, family, and farming. He was a member of St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s Church, Sugar Creek. He served on St. Mary’s Church Council and Cemetery Board and taught high school catechism for a number of years. He was also a member of the Goose Lake Lions Club, Preston Knights of Columbus, and Northeast School Board. He greatly enjoyed following his children and grandchildren’s activities, traveling, and playing cards. After losing his beloved wife of thirty-nine years, he relished traveling with his grandchildren, whom he lovingly referred to as his “little monsters”, to Canada, South Dakota, Florida, Texas, and Colorado. He even tackled white water rafting at age eighty in Glacier National Park. One of the highlights of his life was seeing his beloved Cubs win the 2016 World Series. With twenty-seven year of sobriety, Don regularly attended AA meetings where he helped to mentor others. He will be greatly missed by Snoopy, his dog and constant companion. Don is survived by a daughter, Jeanne (Marty) Seyller of Downers Grove, Illinois, and a son Greg (Robyn) Hughes of Charlotte, Iowa. His is also survived by three grandchildren, Haleigh, Nicolle and Cade Hughes and two step-grandchildren, Emily (Nick) Hauser and Julia Seyller. He leaves behind four brothers, Paul (Denyse) Hughes of Maquoketa, Robert (Barbara) Hughes of Delmar, Dr. Thomas (Mary) Hughes of Geneseo, and Dennis (Debbie) Hughes of Park View, and many nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Linda, who passed away on June 2, 2002; his uncle, James Hughes, whom he farmed with for over forty years; and his godson, Dillon Hughes. In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial fund to purchase park benches to be placed in Lyons, Iowa, and a beautification project for St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bryant, Iowa. Mike was born February 15, 1945, to Tom and Betty Jennings in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. He married Helen (Wallingford) on February 4, 1967. Mike graduated from the University of Iowa and worked for the Social Security Administration for 34 years. After retirement, he worked as a paraprofessional with the Clinton Community School District. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Mike enjoyed playing cards, reading, traveling, cooking, and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Mike had a great sense of humor and loved telling stories to his grandchildren. Mike is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Helen; children Jeff (Christian) of Cedar Rapids, Eric (Kasey) of Clinton, David (Kristin) of Clinton, and Anne Doherty (Dave) of Oak Park, IL; 10 grandchildren; a brother and two sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter, Michelle.
