Bette Lou McCartney age 86 of Fulton, passed away Friday, August 5, 2016 at her home. Cremation rites have been accorded. A visitation will be held from 2:30 to 4:00 P.M. Saturday, August 13, 2016 at the Pape Funeral Home. A memorial service will begin at 4:00 P.M. Bette was born in Davenport on October 4, 1929, the daughter of Charles Edward and Mabel (Kinnamon) Smith. She graduated from Lyons High School and received a double major in Education and Sociology from the University of Iowa, where she marched with the University of Iowa Band in Dwight Eisenhower’s inaugural parade. She served with the U.S. Navy in the WAVE’s in the Personnel Department. Bette married Jerry D. McCartney on September 7, 1963 in Cedar Falls. Bette did social work in St. Louis and Des Moines and later taught for 20 years in the Fulton School District. Bette had been a member of the Fulton Presbyterian Church. She loved attending all her grandchildren’s sports and school activities. She had been a Girl Scout Leader and Director of the YMCA in Iowa City and a member of the WA-TAN-YE. She had been a participant and supporter of Relay for Life, enjoyed dinner theaters, big band music, visiting and talking with people and following the Iowa Hawkeye’s and Cubs. Bette is survived by two daughters; Kim Schaffer of Camanche and Kelly McCartney of Fulton and four grandchildren, Aaron McCartney, Rachel Wilson, Ethan Schaffer and Emma Schaffer. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Arlene Bennett and three brothers; Ed, Jack and her twin Bill.
