Steven J. Westenberger, age 67 of Avon Park, Florida, formerly of Clinton, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2018. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 11:00 to 11:30 AM on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at St. Mark’s Methodist Church in Camanche. A memorial service will begin at 11:30. Burial will follow in Clinton Lawn Cemetery. The Pape Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Steven was born on June 10, 1950 in Clinton, the son of Robert Weller and Janet Lind (Westenberger). He graduated from Clinton High School in1968. Steven retired from the United States Marine Corps as a sergeant major in 1995 after serving his country for 28 years. He then moved to Highlands County and worked as a deputy for Polk County Sheriff’s Office in the South County Jail for 10 years. He was a member of the VFW Post 4300, American Legion Post 69, Amvets, and the Loyal Order of Moose in Avon Park. He enjoyed playing golf, camping, refinishing furniture and socializing with friends, but most of all, he cherished being a Marine.
Steven is survived by his wife Sandra Bruce of Avon Park; a daughter, Jessica Forest (Dustin) of Sebring, Florida and their children, Elizabeth and Tristan; three step-children, Kimberly Saunders (Kevin) of Tallahassee, James Bruce (Xiaoting) of Seattle, Washington and their children, Anthony and Chloe; and Steve Bruce of Avon Park; his sisters, Margaret Rettlowski of Clinton, Linda Copeland of San Diego, Melanie Bailey of Foley, Alabama and Jeanette Westenberger of Davenport; his brothers, David Weller of San Francisco, Danny Weller of Camanche and Kenneth Westenberger, Jr. of Davenport and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his father Kenneth Westenberger and an infant brother. Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com.
