Douglas D. Burman, 82, formerly of Clinton, passed away August 15, 2018 at his home in Ocklawaha, FL.  In following his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded.  A gathering of family and friends will take place at Pape Funeral Home on Monday October 15, 2018 from 4:30-7 PM.  A memorial service will begin at 7 PM.

Doug was born in Clinton, IA on April 6, 1936, the son of Joseph and Dorothy (Schroeder) Burman.  He was born premature at Mercy Hospital and was known as the “Mortal Mite” by hospital staff and Clinton Herald articles.  He was able to survive by keeping warm in a chicken incubator at the hospital until he was strong enough to go home.

Doug attended Clinton schools until the family moved to Tupelo, MS in 1954.  He graduated from Tupelo High School in 1955.  He spent a short time in Washington DC where he met Martha Rodgers Duffy.  They married on September 14, 1957 at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Pittsburgh, PA.  Martha passed away on September 1, 2011.  Doug worked at Alcoa from 1957-67, Baker & Burman Pepsi Distributing from 1967-77 and co-owned Midwest Novelty Company from 1977 until retiring to Ocklawaha, FL in 1988.  Doug was a member of the Clinton Bowling Association, bowling for many years in the Fraternal League at the Recreation Lanes.

Doug LOVED woodworking and had a special knack for it!  He took pride in building furniture for many of his neighbors.  Word of mouth spread and he was never without a project to work on.  He would take on any project he was presented with including toys, tray tables, curio and TV cabinets or just anything made out of wood.  He even built custom cabinets for entire kitchens for a few friends! He donated a model of the Clinton Showboat he built to the Erickson Center where it remains on display today.  His family has many of the items that Doug made that will be cherished forever!

Doug is survived by three children, Joseph (Stephanie) Burman of Clinton, Susan Warren of Ocklawaha, FL and Theresia Burman (Russ Plambeck) of Morrison, IL; one granddaughter Kelly Jo Rizer; three step-grandchildren, Jessie and Jenna Stremlow and Kari Dyjak and two step-great grandchildren Avary and Austin Dyjak.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and his son-in-law Steve Warren.  Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com.
