Ward Harstick - 92

12/19/1923 - 6/6/2016

Clinton, Iowa

Ward and Mary Harstick were together for sixty-three years as husband and wife, marrying in Hanover, Illinois on July 8, 1943 just before Ward left for service in the Army in the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II. They came to Clinton in 1946 for Ward’s job at DuPont where he worked for 36 years. He and his father built the house on North 4th Street in 1948 where Ward and Mary spent the rest of their lives. They loved each other deeply, worked hard and cared for their children Gary and Marianne. They died peacefully in their sleep on the same day, June 6, ten years apart. Ward just a few days ago, Mary in 2006. Ward was born in Savanna, Illinois on December 19, 1923 and Mary on August 15, 1921 in Dubuque, Iowa. Both were leaders in Cub and Boy Scouts. Mary was an active member of St. Boniface Parish and Ward was active in helping his son’s baseball teams. Ward and Mary are members of a most exceptional generation of Americans we reverently call the Greatest Generation. These men and women came of age in the turbulent and very difficult 1920’s and 1930’s, and in the 1940’s they truly saved the world. Many words have been spoken and written about this generation but none more elegant than those of author Daniel James Brown. They certainly apply to Mary and Ward. He wrote…“We are swept away with gratitude for their goodness and their grace, their humility and their honor, their simple civility and all the things they taught us.” What we have inherited from our Greatest Generation parents who have gone from us and from those we are blessed to still have among us, we owe them our goodness toward others, to be full of grace, to be humble, honorable and civil, and to be responsible teachers of our children. On June 10, 2016 Ward and Mary Harstick were interred in Evergreen Cemetery in Hanover, Illinois, surrounded by loving family and friends, and resting peacefully among their parents, relatives and friends who had gone before them. The Pape Funeral Home, Clinton assisted the family. They lived a good life. We are so grateful to them. We love them and miss them deeply. Ward and Mary are survived by their son Gary (wife Catherine and children Christopher, Julia and Anna) in St. Louis, and daughter Marianne (husband Harold and daughter Cali Ryder) in Milan, Illinois. May God bless them and keep them in our hearts. Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com.
